“A consistent message on how and what to divert from the waste stream via recycling also assists in the effectiveness of programs and the reduction of waste.”
Mr McNally said member councils recycled about 60,000 tonnes per year.
In terms of long-term waste management strategies, the RRC had entered in to a contract to provide the disposable waste streams from member councils for the next 30 years to a Energy from Waste plant in Kwinana. The plant will use incineration to produce energy to power about 46,000 households, recover about 8000 tonnes of metals, and create by-products such as bricks. Construction is set to start early next year.
