FEW people credit that road trauma is the leading cause of death for children in WA and the second leading cause of hospitalisation for serious injury.
The little-known but startling realisations are why a road and transport safety school was desperately required, according to Constable Care Child Safety Foundation chief executive David Gribble.
So the Foundation set about building one. Now, they’re hoping that the people will come.
WA’s first road and transport safety school for children was officially opened in Maylands on Tuesday.
Set in a large back yard at the Foundation’s Sixth Avenue premises, and perhaps symbolically within eyesight of busy Guildford Road, the safety school is an amazing development of a replica town featuring all the obstacles a bike-riding child might genuinely come across on the streets of Perth.
There are roads, a life-size bus, train carriage, railway crossing complete with boom gate and flashing lights, traffic lights and crosswalks.
