Blood donors praised
CENTRE EXCELS IN FIRST YEAR
ALMOST 18,000 blood, plasma and platelet donations have been made at the Cannington Blood Donor Centre since it opened in November last year.
And while the centre celebrates its first birthday today, it is also celebrating the generosity of locals who have donated 8400 litres of blood and saved more than 53,000 lives in the last 12 months.
Blood Service spokeswoman Jessica Willet said the centre had also welcomed more than 2100 people new to donating.
“Together the local community has donated more than 8400 litres of blood in the past year which is enough to fill around 30 bath tubs,” she said.
“Our blood donors and the broader community should be very proud of this incredible, lifesaving effort.
“WA needs 2,500 blood donations every week to help people with cancer and blood disease, trauma patients, pregnant mothers, newborn babies and many others.
“Even though one in three people will need blood in their lifetime, only one in 30 currently donate, so we’re encouraging more people in the local community to roll up their sleeves.”
