INCREASE IN STUDENT INTAKE
THE State Government has committed an extra $3 million to a planned new primary school in Byford.
The school, on Lawrence Way, was initially allocated $15.6 million to cater for rapid population growth in Byford.
However, the State Government has committed an extra $3.3m to accommodate long-term projected enrolments based on local residential developments.
The additional funding will enable an extra classroom block to be built and the school to accommodate 540 students, rather than the traditional 430.
Premier Mark McGowan said Byford’s ever-increasing population meant the school’s expansion was an easy decision.
“It’s obviously a massively growing area and everywhere I look in Byford, there’s new houses and new people moving in,” he said. “They’re often young families with school-aged children, so primary schools are essential.
“The school is delivering on an election commitment, it’s meeting the demands of the people here, it‘s creating local jobs with the construction process.”
Construction will begin in 2018 with the school expected to be open in 2020.
