SJ Blues’ first-grade side scored the upset of the season, sneaking home on the penultimate ball against CBC at Briggs Park on Saturday, December 16.

Fielding a below-strength side, a positive SJ team took the field against their more fancied opponents. CBC batted conservatively with an opening partnership of 81 but they were rocked by an explosive spell by Michael Elphinstone.

In his first-grade debut, Elphinstone captured four wickets to help restrict CBC to a modest total of 5-139 from their 40 overs. Shawn Evans (0-23) and Phillip Hicks (0-20) bowled brilliantly from their eight overs, as the SJ fielding was outstanding. The chase for SJ began brightly, as Dean Fulford (39) and John Murphy (22) combined for an opening partnership of 57. Liam Davidson (26) continued the momentum but a middle-order collapse slowed SJ, who went from 5-132 to 9136. It was left to tailender Phillip Hicks to score the winning runs with a ball to spare.

Third Grade travelled to CBC and were comprehensively beaten. The home team batted first and totalled 7-182. In reply SJ were never in the hunt, reaching 5-108 from their 40 overs. Only Kim Mason (32) and Brad Chalmers (52 n.o.) made any headway against an accurate attack.

Fielding six junior players, SJ sixth-grade side batted first against Kenwick and totalled 120. Top scorers were Clayton Stone (29), Neil Bartlett (28) and Mark Paterson (23). Kenwick replied with 5-163 from their 40 overs.

The 1C team welcomed top side Willetton Crows to Mundijong Oval.

The visitors amassed 212. SJ Blues’ reply only lasted 13 overs, as they were rolled for a paltry 42.
