A CANNING Vale company that seeks to employ people on benefits is celebrating a state award and a national nomination.

The local branch of testing, inspection and certification service Bureau Veritas is nominated for Champion Employer of the Year at the National Employment Services Association Awards, which take place on August 8.

Having already won the WA award, general manager Tom Lowther said they were thrilled to be recognised for their efforts to recruit people either previously unemployed or on welfare benefits.

“We’re keen to get people who have not had the best start in life and have lost their way slightly, and get them into work,” he said.

“It’s great when you see people who haven’t worked for a while or are struggling to find employment and they come into employment and you see a big difference in people’s attitude and their whole overall focus and way of life.

“People change when they have employment, their outlook on life is a lot more positive.”

AtWork Australia account co-ordinator Kalusha Chulu, who nominated the company for the awards, is their first point of contact for new employees.

He said he could see the difference they made in the employees’ lives.

“Their lives change because everyone we bring forward is on Centrelink and they work their way through,” he said.

“As long as they’ve got good labouring experience and they’re physically fit, willing to do the shifts, they’re more than happy to give them a chance and train them up.”
