“I con­sider spec work to be any work a client asks you to cre­ate with­out a prom­ise of pay up front, in­clud­ing open-call com­pe­ti­tions that prom­ise the win­ners will be paid and pub­lished.

When­ever I do public speak­ing, at de­sign con­fer­ences or school vis­its, I al­ways talk about how cre­atives should never work for free. When cre­atives are young and just start­ing out, they are ex­tremely ea­ger for any op­por­tu­nity, which is great, but when you work for free, then the client learns they can get good work with­out pay­ing (for the most part). The more and more clients learn, then even­tu­ally the cre­ative in­dus­try will be dead.”
