Riding with the ’chain on

Computer Music - - Make Music Now -

16:53Rich and Paul have their own personal sample libraries, and Rich thinks he might have a suitable ride loop to busy things up a bit, so they use Ableton Link to audition it from his computer. Hearing it in context allows them to make an informed decision about whether it’s right for the track, and they decide that it works. The ride loop is high-passed and compressed with a sidechain input from the project’s trigger channel, causing it to duck when the kick plays. Because sidechain compression can cause clicking artefacts, the lads put Live’s Compressor into Transfer Curve View, where they can adjust the Lookahead time. A Lookahead setting of 10ms alleviates the artefacts.
