In 2001, IK Multimedia’s SampleTank set the standard for the software ROMpler, with a simple but capable front end hiding oodles of multisampled instruments. A free version with limited included content was eventually released, allowing skint users access the essential instrumentation along with a handful of synthesis features.

These days, SampleTank Free is known as SampleTank Custom Shop and though IK hopes you’ll pony up for more content, it nevertheless comes with a 1.1GB collection to get you started. The modern incarnation is also available for iOS users. Still a worthy download. www.ikmultimedia.com
