The perception of bass weight in music comes just as much from the area above the sub frequencies at 150-200Hz upwards as it does from the sub weight below. This is because being able to clearly define the first and second harmonics of the bass as well as feel the sub frequencies gives a more weighty sound on a wider variety of playback systems, including small speakers that lack natural sub bass. To exploit this in your own mixes, try using a multiband processor to beef up your low-mid frequencies; a multiband saturator like Audio Damage’s Kombinat Tri is a great choice for this job. If you’ve got some earbuds handy, they make a great reference tool when mixing low-mid bass.
