Sidechain­ing the Sy­lenth1 stab el­e­ment

One of the stab lay­ers is gen­er­ated by the Sy­lenth1 synth, based on a saw/ square combo. “With this one, again, the main thing is that at­tack on the cut­off,” he ex­plains. “I don’t tend to use the ef­fects in Sy­lenth1 that much, but the cho­rus is cool.”

Alex treats this par­tic­u­lar synth to a touch of sidechain com­pres­sion. “It’s only do­ing it a tiny, tiny bit, but it just adds to the kind of swing of the track – ev­ery time the kick’s com­ing in, it’s duck­ing this synth out a tiny bit. I do use sidechain com­pres­sion a lot, but when it’s just four-on-the-floor, for sim­plic­ity, I use [Nicky Romero] Kick­start the ma­jor­ity of the time. It’s just work­flow, eas­ier to do; as I said, I was do­ing most of this in a plane, so it was a lot eas­ier to load Kick­start than to start go­ing into the sci­ence of sidechain com­pres­sion.”
