Sweeping synth FX
The sweeping, panning synth effect at the start of Rudeboy is one of its most ear-catching elements. “It’s a kind of classic reggae-style thing,” says Dom, “but I actually played it – it’s one note being played – and used the Dave Smith filter on the SP-16 to give it that drive and that sweep, which really worked. It was a nice idea to get something properly analogue in there: a little bit psychotic-sounding!
“Then there’s the horn stab. Again, it’s much more of a hip-hop or trap thing than a reggae thing, but in the mix, it just adds a nice front and attack to sections of the song.”
