Computer Music - - Contents -

A new version of Komplete – Native Instruments’ all-encompassing software bundle – means updates to core NI titles, giving plenty for ’s eager newshounds to chew on. But our news sensors weren’t quite prepared for the insane overload of all the other stuff Native announced alongside Komplete 12. Here it comes…

Komplete 12

NI’s big, beautiful bundle now comes in four sizes: Komplete 12 (£479), Select (£159), Ultimate (£959), and the new Ultimate Collector’s Edition (£1279), which includes 30 extra Expansions. Standard additions include Kontakt 6 (super sampler), TRK-01 (kick ’n’ bass engine), Session Guitarist – Electric Sunburst (virtual riffing Stratocaster), Expansions (“for the first time ever”), and last but not least…

Massive X

Following months of rumours, Massive X turns out to be a real thing after all. It’s a sequel to the ultra-successful Massive hybrid synth that launched in 2007 and soon became ubiquitous in modern production. X features a new “next generation” sound engine, modular approach, and more. Unfortunately, that’s all we know right now, because it’s not actually launching till February 2019. Pricing is unconfirmed, but get Komplete 12 now and Massive X is yours upon release.

Kontakt 6

Another long awaited update, Kontakt 6 (£339) jazzes up the world’s favourite soft sampler. Three new instruments – Analog Dreams, Ethereal Earth and Hybrid Keys – debut the Kontakt Play Series, combining “powerful sound design with simple playability”. There are new effects, a wavetable engine, and Creator Tools, a standalone app for instrument designers.

Komplete Kontrol S88 Mk2 & A Series

The top-flight Komplete Kontrol S88 (£799) MIDI keyboard reaches Mk2 with “more immersive visual feedback and deeper control”. As before, it features a “fullyweighted, hammer-action” Fatar keybed. If your wallet is not fully weighted, however, there’s the affordable new A Series ’boards. Available in 25- (£119), 49- (£159) and 61-key (£199) models, they feature a small OLED display for navigation, semi-weighted keybeds, eight touch-sensitive knobs, pitch/ mod wheels, 4-directional push encoder, Smart Play, Komplete Kontrol integration and more.

Maschine Mikro Mk3

This pint-sized “beatmaking companion” gets pumped up with bigger pads based on those of the ace Maschine Mk3 and a Smart Strip touch-strip. It’s £199.

Traktor Pro 3, Kontrol S2 & S4

Industry-standard DJ software Traktor Pro 3 (£89, out 18 October) sports a new interface design “for better readability in club environments”, improved timestretching, Mixer FX (“one-knob effect and filter controls… for big buildups and transitions”), a direct routing mode, and more.

The flagship Kontrol S4 (£719) DJ controller reaches Mk3 status, with hightorque motorised Haptic Drive jog wheels that “transmit cue points and more direct to your fingertips”. The Kontrol S2 (£239) gets “upsized” jog wheels with its improved touch-sensitivity.
