The Social Enterprise Warrior
Identifiable by their Fjallraven Kånken backpack and perpetually windswept appearance (from cycling everywhere), the modern breed of charity worker is all about f inding new ways to make a difference. They live in an industrial warehouse, are on the waiting list for an allotment and regard heavyweights like Oxfam as the McDonald’s of charities compared to their own ‘ boutique’ cause. At the weekends you’ll f ind them teaching puppetry to kids from innercity estates. Most likely to say: ‘ Is it my round? Hang on, I’ll set up a JustGiving page.’
Want to join them? If you’re applying for a job with a charity, show some engagement with them beforehand, even if it’s just following their accounts, or donating something each month. Also, start out small: the bigname charities are inundated with many hopefuls – one Amnesty International job received around 2000 applicants. Look for niche charities, or new ones.
