‘ My call to arms on violence against women came in 2012 when Jill Meagher made a choice any one of us could have made. A woman my age, in Melbourne, decided to walk home – a 10minute journey – after a night out with friends, on a Saturday night. She never came back. This could have been me,

this could have been any one of us. How could it have happened in Australia? Violence against women, in all its forms – physical, verbal, financial, or emotional – is unacceptable, and more often than not is a pre- cursor to further acts of violence. I have spoken to victims of gender- based violence, and the evidence is clear

– education and support are key. Beyond that, we can also speak up for those who can’t, change the narrative in mainstream media, and implore our judicial and justice systems to stop blaming and shaming victims and start protecting them. This is how we make change. I would like to see the end of gender- based violence in my lifetime. I want to contribute to a world in which girls and women are empowered to be themselves and live free from violence. I urge anyone out there experiencing this type of behaviour in a relationship to seek help. And I urge our allies against genderbased violence to speak up and take action.’
