When did you start working with typography?
I started playing with brush lettering in 2014 when I was studying graphic design at Shillington College. Our teachers always encouraged us to create an element of our design by hand, and for me it was often the typography. Handwritten lettering to use within my designs turned into something I really loved doing, so I started Harley Quinn & Co. firstly as a Instagram page then later, when I started to get requests for custom lettering, prints and design work, I decided to turn it into a business.
What’s your favourite way to use typography?
I enjoy creating custom designs for special events and weddings, and then seeing those designs roll out across every element surrounding the day. When something is designed and created by hand it has such a beautiful one-of-a-kind feeling to it, which is why I love it so much.
What kind of services do you offer for weddings?
I create custom designs for invitation suites, as well as any other collateral needed for the day. I also offer hand lettering for envelopes, and can create custom-printed signage, too.
What do you love most about working with engaged couples?
I love working with people who are so excited about the job they’ve briefed me on. Often, engaged couples are exactly that. I love learning about their plans and working with them to come up with a design that matches the theme of their wedding, as well as their personalities. For me, planning my wedding was something I loved doing, so it’s great that now I get to work with other engaged couples and share in their love and joy. It’s a huge honour.
Do you have a favourite piece of wedding work you’ve done?
One of my favourites was for a beautiful wedding for a couple in the Blue Mountains – the event itself was a rustic and colourful garden party, and the designs worked so well with the entire feel of the day. I’m also especially fond of the work that I did for my own wedding, where I brush lettered various sayings and song lyrics, then had them all framed and positioned throughout the reception. I still have some of them up around my house. Follow Erin @harleyquinnandco
