A tur­bine is a pro­pel­ler in re­verse. Mov­ing wa­ter causes it to re­volve, which in turn spins an elec­tri­cal gen­er­a­tor. Mod­ern tur­bines can turn the ki­netic energy of flow­ing wa­ter into elec­tric­ity with an ef­fi­ciency of about 90%.
