As soon as I saw Kara Rosenlund’s image of a kangaroo with her joey on a beach, I was struck by how beautiful — and how Australian — it was.
And how apt a cover it was for this issue, where the country meets the coast on our pages. From the inland, where ABC TV’S Back Roads presenter Heather Ewart has written an exclusive story on White Cliffffs for Country Style, to our pick of the best coastal holiday spots. But back to the cover. Shot on an isolated beach in Yuraygir National Park, near Yamba in NSW, Kara was packing up her camp site when she saw the pair. “The summer rain was starting to fall lightly on the sand and they stopped for a moment to stare at me. I slowly inched closer and closer, and as soon as I pressed the button and captured this frame, they were gone, bouncing up the beach. These sort of moments are the ones that never leave you, the ones that give you goosebumps,” explains this talented photographer. Photographers like Kara have spent years developing their art and make it look easy — which it defifinitely isn’t. Another story in this issue that required perseverance and dedication is on page 28. When writer Claire Mactaggart told photographer Michael Wee about a droving trip she was planning, she wasn’t surprised when he offffered to come along. “There was the small matter of him not having ridden a horse before, but I knew that wouldn’t stop Michael. He spent the day before getting acquainted with Frank, a quiet stockhorse, and I showed him the basics of horseriding. Over the next two days, Michael rode with us, all the while moving around the mob to capture the best shots. We were all very impressed!” Our short story competition is on again — this year’s theme is ‘light’ — and I look forward to reading all your entries.
