Ryan Kingsnorth, Tamborine Mountain Free Range Eggs, Tamborine Mountain, Queensland With his fifirst delivery of 400 brown laying hens in December 2014, Ryan Kingsnorth found himself smitten. “There’s no other word that comes close to describing the feeling,” he says. “I’m hooked on chooks.” Ryan grew up on his father Ron’s 80-hectare hobby farm, Cedar Lodge, at Tamborine Mountain, 45 minutes inland from the Gold Coast, and had been looking for an agricultural enterprise that would allow him to return to live and work there. “I had the idea of producing free-range eggs and it took offff really quickly,” he says. The flflock now numbers 900 birds: they’re rotated onto fresh pasture every few days and are accommodated in what Ryan calls the Rolls Royce of chicken caravans. Tamborine Mountain Free Range Eggs are delivered to a variety of local outlets within 48 hours of being laid. “The best thing is being able to work from home,” says Ryan. “I’m close to family, I don’t have to travel to work aand I love it.” 0498 096 540; tm
