Subtle colour and precise detail create a kitchen made for entertaining.
When acclaimed interior designers Sarah-jane Pyke and Juliette Arent of Sydney firm Arent and Pyke proposed green-coloured cabinetry for the kitchen in this five-bedroom house in Sydney’s east, their clients had no hesitation. “They loved the character and warmth it would bring,” says Sarah-jane. Keen entertainers, the couple wanted to update the kitchen and better connect it to the dining space and backyard, where a pizza oven is in regular use. “They wanted something that reflected their character, which is traditional and English, but it’s a non-period house so we needed to create something modern but gracious.” The beauty is in the detail — handpainted cabinetry in Dulux ‘Moorland’, custom-made handles in American oak and veined Calacatta marble benchtops with a rounded edge. “It’s unusual to see this level of detail in a kitchen that isn’t a French Provincial style, but we wanted everything to feel refined and considered.”
