The median house price is between $400,000 and $500,000 for a two- to three-bedroom brick or timber home in Trentham. According to Frances Harkin, sales director of Harkin Property in Trentham, the town is increasingly attractive to city and interstate buyers looking for a change and the opportunity to move into an original early home or farmhouse, which tend to get snapped up quickly. “People from Melbourne often have a romanticised idea of the classic miners’ cottage from the 1800s or a farmhouse on the outskirts of town,” she says. Frances also adds there are new development areas around town, where the trend is towards building energy-efficient homes designed for the region’s cool climate. Part of Trentham’s attraction is that it’s very much a country town with a vibrant community. “It doesn’t have a train station, so it’s not a commuter town,” Frances says. “But there’s everything else here. There are great eateries, galleries and festivals. It might have a cold climate, but it’s got a warm community spirit.”
