Charlie Arnott, Charlie Arnott Grass Fed Beef — Naturally, Boorowa, NSW When Charlie Arnott took over Hanaminno — the family farm inn Boorowa, NSW — he farmed it the same way his father had. “We ran a conventional mixed farm; cattle, sheep and crops,” he says. “It was a model that focused on the economic relationship with the land and was about profifit.” In 2004, things changed when Charlie attended a lecture on biodynamics. “It struck a chord, and prompted me to question what I was doing and who I was producing food for,” Charlie says. He changed his farming practice and his attitude; now the focus is on soil and pasture health, and producing food. “We decided to sell our beef direct to customers — to sell the sizzle, not just the sausage,” he says. It may not sound like a big shift but, as Charlie says, when you know who is eating your beef and your customers know who is growing their meat, other factors — such as transparency, respect and trust — become part of the transaction. 0412 623 422; char
