With uninterrupted views of Thredbo’s famed three-kilometre High Noon run (one of Australia’s longest ski runs), The Eastern boasts “the best view in the village,” says Sydney-based photographer Monique Easton, whose family have owned the one-bedroom apartment — and travelled down each ski season — for the last 20 years. In 2016, she gave the place a Scandinavian-inspired makeover, with white-washed timber floors and ceilings, a streamlined kitchen and linen bedding. “I wanted to provide a beautiful option for design-focused travellers, but also something that would feel like a second home and provide value for money.” Catering to couples or families with one child under five, the apartment is located a short stroll from everything on the eastern side of Thredbo Village. When it comes time for lunch — and a warming schnapps — Monique says it’s worth jumping in the car and driving 20 minutes to artist Bradley Spalding’s Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery on the Alpine Way. On the way down from Sydney, she detours for coffee and cake at Merrita’s Fruitcakes in Nimmitabel or stops for something more substantial at Some Café in Collector.
