Although she’s worked on lifestyle magazines for more than 15 years, Penny’s career began at The Maitland Mercury in the NSW Hunter Valley. “I cut my teeth reporting on CWA meetings and chasing fire engines,” she says. What did she like about writing the Thumpstons’ story? “The house, with its verandah, wisteria and kangaroos in the yard, reminded me of my childhood home,” says Penny, who grew up in the Hunter and now lives on the NSW north coast. “We live in a cottage on the Richmond River at Ballina and it’s like being in a nature documentary. There’s an array of birdlife, fish, stingrays and even dolphins in the river. There’s also sharks, but let’s not talk about that.”
