Ablack enamel wood-burn­ing Esse stove is at the heart of Jackie and Richard Dar­gav­ille’s kitchen in Fish Creek, Vic­to­ria. Jackie says the stove was a fea­ture she had to have when the cou­ple were plan­ning the room with Edi­tion Of­fice architects. “It now feels like one of the fam­ily… a liv­ing, breath­ing pres­ence that of­ten pleases, some­times be­haves er­rat­i­cally and oc­ca­sion­ally has tantrums,” she says. “De­spite it all, we love it and wouldn’t want to be with­out it.” The stove runs on wood and has mul­ti­ple func­tions — as well as cook­ing, it pro­vides hot wa­ter and heats the house through pipes in the con­crete slab and hy­dronic pan­els in the be­d­rooms. A bank of north-fac­ing win­dows lets in an abun­dance of nat­u­ral light, while sil­ver­top ash wood pan­elling adds warmth to the mono­chrome scheme.
