The quality of prime lambs was celebrated at the IGA Perth Royal Show with the Fairclough family of York scooping a handful of wins and the most overall points.

The Faircloughs took out the award for grand champion pen of the three lambs in the prime lamb carcase competition with a trio of White Suffolkcrossed Merino.

Judged the open champion carcase on the hook was a Texel cross Texel/ Merino, exhibited by the Glover family of Boyup Brook, in class three.

At processing, the lamb was 31⁄2 months of age with a live weight of 39.5kg, a dress weight of 20.9kg and was straight off mum.

JimJan Texel stud’s Jim Glover said his success with the breed hailed from its capability for early maturity, muscling and quality meat, particularly with high-end cuts.

Contributing to the Faircloughs’ overall points was a win in the champion export pen of three lambs and the champion lightweight pen of three lambs.

The trio of carcases had an average weight of 17.5kg and a fat average of 8.3mm. Stockdale stud co-principal Laurie Fairclough attributed his family’s consistent success to hard work and progressive genetics.

“We are looking for a carcase type sheep that has muscle, smoother shoulders,” he said.

The Squires family of Quairading won the champion heavyweight pen of three lambs category with a trio of Poll Dorset crossed Prime SAMM/ Merinos. Shirlee Downs stud co-principal Chris Squires said his family’s success in the carcase competition came down to good management.

“It helps to have two sons who are full-time and together we make those important decisions that count on sheep production,” he said.

“We are always searching for advanced genetics to introduce to our stud which filters through to our commercial prime lamb enterprise.”

There were equal winners for the Merino dam champion carcase on the hook division.

The Faircloughs’ White Suffolkcrossed Merino carcase amassed equal points with Harvey Agricultural College’s Poll Dorset-crossed Merino.
