Journalist awarded

Countryman - - NEWS -

Journalist Dorothy Henderson, a prolific writer for Countryman, has won the best freelancer category at this year’s prestigious WA Media Awards.

The judges said of her entries: “This set of stories presents the widest variety of rural life with empathy and an understanding of the land.

“The author gives the reader a nuanced insight into the experiences of people, and not through ‘man on the land’ stereotypes. Henderson clearly likes and respects her interviewees, whether they are commenting comically on an earthquake shock and the solace of sharing the experience on social media, or a mother describing the value of growing market vegetables with her two young sons”.

In a poignant touch, Ms Henderson said she was encouraged to submit the entries by her daughter Ally, before she was tragically killed by a bull in a farm accident a few weeks ago.

Seven West Media took out several awards at last Saturday’s gala presentation.
