First-term Nat to take agri­cul­ture reins

First-term Na­tion­als back­bencher David Lit­tleproud will take over the agri­cul­ture port­fo­lio af­ter a Fed­eral Cabi­net reshuf­fle an­nounced by the Prime Min­is­ter this week.

Mr Lit­tleproud, the Mem­ber for Mara­noa in ru­ral Queens­land, has only been in the Par­lia­ment since last year’s elec­tion but will take over the key min­istry from party leader Barn­aby Joyce.

Mr Joyce will move to the in­fra­struc­ture port­fo­lio.

In mak­ing the an­nounce­ment on Tues­day, Prime Min­is­ter Mal­colm Turn­bull said 41-year-old Mr Lit­tleproud was a ca­pa­ble man with 20 years ex­pe­ri­ence in agribusi­ness.

“I’m de­lighted to wel­come Barn­aby Joyce back as Deputy Prime Min­is­ter and Min­is­ter for In­fra­struc­ture and Trans­port, a vi­tal port­fo­lio as the Gov­ern­ment rolls out its record $75 bil­lion in­fra­struc­ture pro­gram,” he said.

“David Lit­tleproud will be­come the min­is­ter for agri­cul­ture and wa­ter re­sources and he will bring to that role two decades of ex­pe­ri­ence in agribusi­ness be­fore he went into Par­lia­ment.” A for­mer agribusi­ness banker, Mr Lit­tleproud was one of five new faces pro­moted to the Fed­eral Cabi­net on Tues­day.

Deputy Na­tion­als leader Brid­get McKen­zie will take the sport, ru­ral health and re­gional com­mu­ni­ca­tions port­fo­lios, while Jus­tice Min­is­ter Michael Keenan will be­come Min­is­ter for Hu­man Ser­vices.

Queens­land Lib­eral and Groom MP John McVeigh will take on the re­gional de­vel­op­ment port­fo­lio, while Lib­eral MP Dan Te­han will take on the role of So­cial Ser­vices Min­is­ter.
