Islay Angus set to impress
Showcasing a breeding emphasis on docility and structure, Narrogin-based Islay Angus stud will offer six bulls at the
Invitational Bull Sale on Tuesday, February 20.
Islay stud, established by the Young sisters — Denby, 10, and Jorja, 13 — was a succession of their grandfather John Young’s Strathtay stud, which dispersed in 2014. Females that were not suited for the dispersal sale were the basis for the Islay foundation herd, which has grown to 15 registered cows.
Naturally, Islay’s breeding objective flows with its young caretakers, who enjoy working with quiet, yet productive, cattle.
The sisters are regulars on the show scene and at the 2015 Perth Royal Show they exhibited the grand champion Angus bull, Islay Karma K29. Judge Corey Ireland said the bull had a beautiful front end, strong carcase and moved extremely well.
At the 2016 Wagin Woolorama cattle show, their Islay Strathtay Annabelle was judged champion British female.
At this year’s Invitational Bull Sale, held in Narrogin, Islay will offer four sons of Te Mania Garth G67 — a trait leader in docility.
Islay Mandalong M1 will lead the sale team, a Garth G67 son that was in the top one per cent for docility, recording an Estimated Breeding Value of +36 for the trait. The bull also recorded a birthweight of +2.4 (top 10 per cent), milk EBV of +19 (top 15 per cent) and positive rib and rump fat, +1 and +0.7, respectively, while having an above-average eye muscle area of +6.4.
Another son of Garth G67 on offer, Islay Mississippi M5, also ranked in the top one per cent for docility (+34) and milk (+25).
This bull recorded EBV growth of +52, +95 and +124 for 200, 400 and 600-day weights, respectively, combined with an EMA of +7.5 and retail beef yield of +1.3 — all ranked in the top 10 per cent of the breed.
Another bull to feature in the sale team, Islay Murray M11, was sired by Garth G67 and was in the top one per cent for docility (+31) and milk (+25).
Islay Mississippi M5 is one of six Angus bulls on offer from the stud at the Invitational Bull Sale on Tuesday, February 20.
