Num­bers were down last week at Katan­ning sa­le­yards, with 15,573 mixed-qual­ity sheep penned. This was 1260-head fewer than the pre­vi­ous sale.

Lamb prices were up on the pre­vi­ous sale, with pro­ces­sors bid­ding strongly on prime lambs and feeder buy­ers on un­fin­ished lines. Re­stock­ers sought out qual­ity young ewes, pay­ing up to $140/head for the best.

Light lambs sold for $70 to $92/head to pro­ces­sors, while air­freight weights sold for $98 to $122/head.

Trade-weight lambs sold for $120 to $144/head, paid for Merino lambs with a fleece, while heavy lambs sold to $145/head. Young Merino ewes sold for $50/head, for lightweights, and up to $140/head, for the best cou­ple of pens and paid by re­stock­ers.

Good-qual­ity heavy mut­ton over 24kg cwt eased $1 to $6/head in price, sell­ing for $90 to $125/head, in­clud­ing skins, to av­er­age 370¢/kg cwt.

Medium-weight ewes (18-23kg cwt) sold for $72 to $100/head to pro­ces­sors and $95/head to re­stock­ers.

Wethers suit­able for live ex­port re­turned prices of $75 to $104/head, de­pend­ing on weight. Rams to live ex­port sold for $65 to $85/head.
