All set for an exciting summer

Cruise Passenger - - PUBLISHER’S LETTER - Peter Lynch Publisher, Cruise Passenger

Welcome to one of our favourite editions – our summer extravaganza. Inside, you’ll find the best of next year’s ships and destinations, the results of our biggest-ever Readers’ Choice Awards, and reviews of the ships and lines Australians love.

The coming year promises exciting innovations that will improve the experience of passengers. Technologies such as Princess Cruises’ Ocean Medallion and Royal Caribbean’s Sea Beyond will mean almost every crew member will know at a glance what guests like best.

Indeed, with sensors in the fabric of the ship, even the vessel is there to serve, turning on lights and air conditioning as your approach your cabin and signalling to staff where you are.

All of this is just the tip of the iceberg. Celebrity Edge, with its moving platform that transforms into different venues at different times of the day is demonstrating how far the art of shipbuilding has come.

MSC is promising to transform its fleet with new mega-liners that will make it Royal Caribbean’s major rival, while Regent, Oceania, Silversea and Ponant are expanding the luxury mid- and small-ship category.

We also review one of our new favourites. Peregrine, part of the Intrepid group, has expanded its fleet of small ships carrying a maximum of 50 passengers, which can take you around the glorious locations of Europe like a billionaire aboard your own yacht.

Finally, we thank all our readers for a magnificent turnout of almost 10,000 voters in our Readers’ Choice poll – our biggest turnout ever.

We know the cruise lines read this poll more than any other, because it comes from you. Your votes help shape the industry of the future – a contribution that will last well into the future.

Smooth sailing!
