TRAIN FOR TERRAIN
I’ll train differently before tackling this route again. I tried to ride conservatively – not tackling the hills with the momentum I do at home. It meant I challenged unused muscles, which didn’t play to my strengths. I may need to find some mountains back in London to practise on.
MOUNTAINS ARE LEVELLERS
Some of those who were strong at the start struggled 10 hours later, whereas the weaker starters were doing better later in the day. You never know how your body will respond to climbing an Alp at 3am!
