TRAIN FOR TER­RAIN

I’ll train dif­fer­ently be­fore tack­ling this route again. I tried to ride con­ser­va­tively – not tack­ling the hills with the mo­men­tum I do at home. It meant I chal­lenged un­used mus­cles, which didn’t play to my strengths. I may need to find some moun­tains back in Lon­don to prac­tise on.

MOUN­TAINS ARE LEV­ELLERS

Some of those who were strong at the start strug­gled 10 hours later, whereas the weaker starters were do­ing bet­ter later in the day. You never know how your body will re­spond to climb­ing an Alp at 3am!
