SUSSEX CYCLING INDUSTRY
Rural backwater? Perhaps. But Sussex is home to Orro, which ‘rigorously’ tests its bikes at Ditchling Beacon – which has featured in the Tour de France and Tour of Britain and is in the heart of winegrowing country – and to Kinesis, which is based in Worthing, not far from Highdown Vineyard.
Both these companies manufacture their bikes abroad, and while this is true of some of Enigma’s bikes, many, including the Echelon we tested, are welded at Enigma Bikes’ Hailsham facility. You could even combine a visit to Enigma with trips to nearby vineyards, or the English Wine Centre in Berwick, East Sussex, where you can choose from 150 English wines. Probably best to have a designated driver…
Brighton, meanwhile, hosts Reilly Cycleworks, which was founded by Damon Fisher, Neil Fitzgerald and renowned framebuilder Mark Reilly, of Omega and Enigma fame. Reilly makes carbon fibre frames in Sliverstone, but steel and titanium in bonny Brighton.
