Daily Mercury - - NEWS OPINION -

Re SSM debate. I have no problem with gay people being allowed to marry. However my concern is with Malcolm Turnbull and his refusal to produce legislation to protect Freedom of Speech and religious freedom. He is silent on this for a reason. Why is he not being open and transparent? There is far more to this than marriage equality. It's not just about two gay people being allowed to marry. Watch this space people because things are going to get ugly. Vote No because a yes vote will have a far reaching effect on our Freedom of Speech and much more. — HC, West Mackay In reply to Ryan Vigilante DM 16/9/17. Does you argument also apply to QANTAS, NRL, ARU and every other organisations and businesses who support the Yes campaign or does your argument only apply to Christian organisations - so much for religious freedom if that is the case. The debate has to be respectful and consistent and if a organisation or business exercise their right to express their opinion in favour of yes that is okay yet why does everyone get all up and arms if a Christian organisation express their opinion in favour of No. And no I do not align myself with any religion. — KS, North Mackay The alleged racial slur case in Mackay rugby league could have been cleared one way or the other a lot quicker if the officials close enough had their wired for sound equipment switched on an recorded what was alleged to have been said. The fault here lies with the officiating an the MDRL for not enforcing this technology. Now we have an alleged offender named publicly with a cloud of controversy surrounding him going forward that he will have to deal with on and off the field. On the other hand the alleged grieved party and fellow player’s who made the on field complaint have had their credibility and integrity questioned as well. Believing the system would serve justice. All parties involved have to live with the outcome and live with their conscience as the system has not supported either party truly. Only they know the truth an will have to live it. This process is not the only fault in the judicial system in the MDRL. — RL, Mackay
