Groper freed from shark nets

MACKAY sharks weren’t safe dur­ing Septem­ber with more caught in nets in this re­gion than all oth­ers that sit along the Great Bar­rier Reef.

Dur­ing the month seven sharks were caught in Mackay, more than both Glad­stone and Townsville where five were caught.

There was one caught in nets off Capri­cor­nia and Cairns each.

Of those caught in Mackay, two were at Har­bour Beach, Eimeo Beach and Lam­berts Beach and one at Bu­ca­sia.

A groper had to be freed af­ter it be­came caught in the shark hooks at Har­bour Beach on Septem­ber 8.

The sharks in the re­gion weren’t as lucky, all seven ended up dead.

The species were two blue whalers and five tiger sharks.

In Au­gust there were two sharks caught in the Mackay re­gion; both tiger sharks that were caught at the Bu­ca­sia and Har­bour beaches.
