Groper freed from shark nets
MACKAY sharks weren’t safe during September with more caught in nets in this region than all others that sit along the Great Barrier Reef.
During the month seven sharks were caught in Mackay, more than both Gladstone and Townsville where five were caught.
There was one caught in nets off Capricornia and Cairns each.
Of those caught in Mackay, two were at Harbour Beach, Eimeo Beach and Lamberts Beach and one at Bucasia.
A groper had to be freed after it became caught in the shark hooks at Harbour Beach on September 8.
The sharks in the region weren’t as lucky, all seven ended up dead.
The species were two blue whalers and five tiger sharks.
In August there were two sharks caught in the Mackay region; both tiger sharks that were caught at the Bucasia and Harbour beaches.
