State’s black lung contempt astounding

Daily Mercury - - NEWS | OPINION | YOUR SAY - — Kevin Clough, Blacks Beach

THE contempt shown by this State Government to the 68 recommendations from the Black Lung, White Lies report is astounding (DM 13/10/17, Page 8).

The Select Committee chair, MP Jo-Ann Miller, is bitterly disappointed in the lack of action from the Government, particularly Mines Minister Anthony Lynham stating that the “recommendations were complex and still required additional analysis and consultation”.

Our miners are suffering and possibly dying early from this insidious disease while the Government sits on the report recommendations, particularly creating the new, independent Mine Safety and Health Authority.

This may be because that one of the report recommendations is the new authority be established in Mackay instead of the “great south east”.

I implore all Members of Parliament to show some internal fortitude and get this issue moving to a successful conclusion so our miners can have some assurance that their health is more important than politics.

As a long time cynic of politicians, maybe the Labor Government is holding off until after the upcoming State election so they won’t have to make a decision if they lose and then they can blame the LNP.
