What’s trending on social media this week

Daily Mercury - - WEEKEND - with Alexia Purcell Alexia Purcell is a News Corp social media editor.

WHO doesn’t love a good news story? We had a cracker last weekend on our websites about a baby born by the side of the Bruce Hwy in North Queensland.

The story went: a mum-of-one thought she had plenty of time to dash to the hospital with baby number two on the way but halfway through the 67km journey she screamed at her partner to pull over.

“I have to push, I have to push. I could feel my waters bulging and then there was a head,” she told the Whitsunday Times.

“He pulled over as soon as he could but at that stage she had already come and was on my chest.”

Unable to recline the front seat because of the baby seats, her partner made a makeshift bed on the side of the road. But he couldn’t remove the baby because of the cord.

“I didn’t have my Leatherman or knife,” he said.

After an ambulance arrived and mum and baby were checked over, the proud dad cut the cord and they all went to hospital.

There the dad madly googled highway baby names but the search only returned “bad ass girl biker names”.

In the end they named her Layla Maree.

Mother and new baby wait for the QAS halfway between Bowen and Proserpine.
