MACKAY CRICKET HITS 150!
Cricket has always been at the heart of the Mackay community.
So it will be sweet celebration at the Party in the Park on November 17 when Mackay cricket marks the 150th anniversary of the game in our region. Over the years, some of Australia’s and the world’s best players have competed in Mackay. Legendary names such as Viv Richards, Adam Gilchrist and Ian Healy have all taken to the pitch in front of big crowds at Harrup Park. Mackay’s status as a centre of cricket excellence was officially recognised earlier this year when the Mackay Cricket Association won the title of Queensland’s Cricket Association of the Year.
Harrup Park Country Club chairman Terry Doolan says that cricket has played a huge part in the life of the Mackay community.
“Cricket has always been a massively popular sport in our region and it remains so today. It’s wonderful to reflect on the past, but also to look toward the great things ahead for cricket in Mackay and at Great Barrier Reef Arena,” Doolan said.
GREAT BARRIER REEF ARENA CUP
The historic occasion will be marked by the inaugural Great Barrier Reef Arena Cup. The big T20 match will feature local heroes and state sports stars from across many codes and supports the Pink Ribbon Foundation and Movember Foundation. The teams will be led by captains Grant Sullivan (ex-Queensland Bulls) and big-hitting Australian and Brisbane Heat all-rounder Grace Harris. Team members are each sponsored by local and regional businesses. This is T20 with a twist - each team will have 15 wickets and the team to reach 150 runs in the least number of balls wins the game. There’s also your chance to be part of the action and win great prizes with the XXXX Gold $10,000 Catch and the Triple M Smack a Six competitions.
