FNQ farmers earn reprieve

PARMALAT WILL purchase milk from rival processor Lion to supply Far North Queensland hospitals, instead of transporting it from its southern Queensland plants. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service awarded its milk tender to service all of its health facilities to Parmalat and not the Lion-owned Dairy Farmers. It would have proved detrimental to the region’s dairy farmers, who supply Lion. The contract was for an estimated 8 million litres of milk a year. Parmalat will now buy the milk from Lion after experiencing a backlash. Forty local farmers supply the Malanda factory.
