New group ready to get up and running
THE prospect of getting out of bed early to exercise on weekends may seem daunting to some.
On Saturday morning, however, organisers of a running group are encouraging locals to do exactly that.
This weekend, Dalby parkrun will be holding its official launch, and everybody is invited.
Dalby parkrun director Myfanwy Schenk said parkrun has been taking off all over Australia and other parts of the world for several years.
“It’s a free, timed, weekly 5km run. I think they’ve been going in Australia for about six years and there are around 207 different places where they’re held,” she said.
“I moved out here from Brisbane, my family are there, and they encouraged me to go along there and I just loved it, I really loved the community aspect and loved seeing people who weren’t healthy still get involved on a weekly basis.
“So I came out here and thought I’d get it up and running.”
The run will kick off at 7am from the corner of Jimbour and Edwards Sts, with organisers setting up from 6.30am.
In addition to Dalby runners, Mrs Schenk said there would be parkrun enthusiasts travelling from Highfields, Warwick, Ipswich and Brisbane.
“I have met so many wonderful people by doing this. I drove to Highfields once when they needed volunteers, and now they’re bringing a bus out of about 15 people out here,” she said.
“So even if you don’t know anybody, or you’re not a runner, get along to the launch – there will be somebody who will be going a similar speed, and we’ll go out for breakfast or coffee afterwards.
“We’ll definitely have some people who can do it in under 20 minutes, but others will walk and take an hour, and everybody is welcome.
“We’ll even have volunteer walkers who keep up the rear and make sure nobody gets left behind or is struggling.”
While the race itself is free, participants are required to register online and print out a barcode to bring in order to be timed and recorded.
Despite last weekend’s heatwave, Mrs Schenk said participants need not be deterred by warm weather.
“Just make sure to put sunscreen on, and we’ll run past a water fountain,” she said. “We’ll have Zooper Doopers at the finish as well, so if that’s not an incentive I don’t know what is!
“I definitely encourage everybody to get out of bed and come along.”
