Riders to race for a cure
Event that raises Hopes n Dreams for those in our lives who need it the most
BARREL RACING: The Hopes n Dreams Barrel Race is an equestrian event that raises money for Breast Cancer Network Australia, with Dalby set to host an event from November 3-5.
From humble beginnings last year, the Hopes n Dreams Barrel Race was created to give women and men over 40 an opportunity to compete in the much-loved event – all for a good cause, of course.
“When you get past 40 or 50, you can’t compete as you used to,” event co-ordinator Carina Stephens said.
“And there are no categories for age, so we created one.”
Stephens said she wanted to get back on the horse.
“But I wanted to ride again for a reason – raising money for Breast Cancer Network Australia,” she said.
Even though the success of the Hopes n Dreams Pink Lady Barrel Race has been a whirlwind, Stephens said BCNA had been amazing to work alongside.
“They have supported us every step of the way,” she said.
“It’s really taken off. The entrants are lining up for each event and they love it.”
The first to sign up to their inaugural event last year?
Roma cowgirl Tina Hamilton.
“It’s a cause very close to all our hearts,” Hamilton said.
From small beginnings with Hamilton trailblazing out in front, Hopes n Dreams raised more than $6000 in Dalby last year and more than $15,000 in Gingin, Western Australia, this year.
“But it’s not just about the money,” Stephens said.
“Some entrants have raised thousands of dollars but it’s also about getting out into their communities and raising awareness about breast cancer too.
“As Dalby once again approaches there is hope in my heart that you will get behind her again and let her ride.
“Tina and her mum, Dulcie Chappell, have become so very much a part of Hopes n Dreams and I just want to see her raise that $250 and ride again.”
Each rider who signs up for the event is given a unique link to their fundraising page.
A minimum of $250 needs to be raised before riders can participate in the fundraiser.
Hopes n Dreams is generally run in conjunction with another major equine event.
The next barrel race will be held during the NRA Unique Horseman Australian Colt Starting Challenge in Dalby from November 3–5.
