Wandoan Festival a hit with the locals

Dalby Herald - - BEST OF THE WEST -

HUNGRY revellers donned their lederhosen and dirndl to tuck into German hot dogs and raise their beer steins in the sunshine two weekends ago.

This was the scene at Wandoan's inaugural Oktoberfest on Saturday.

The intersection of Royd and Lawton Sts was closed off to cars and lined with market stalls, sideshow alleys, a mechanical bull and an impressive beer hall manned by the Juandah Hotel bar staff.

A woodchopping display by some of the best axemen from across the region kept festival-goers entertained with their thrilling antics.

Juandah Hotel publican and festival mastermind Philip Snook said the festival wasn't just about Oktoberfest, but rather about celebrating the community of Wandoan.

"This isn't about me and the pub, it's about the people and the town.”

"We thought that if we could create something that no one else was doing in the area, we could draw the crowds.”

Oktoberfest at Wandoan was a huge success.
