THE pilot of a glider which crashed on Monday near Goondiwindi has been identified as the owner of a Dalby motel.

Victorian man Simon Brown, who owned the Dalby Parkview Motel, was identified on Monday by authorities as the person who died in the accident on the Queensland-New South Wales border.

Employees of the motel said they were shocked when they learnt of Mr Brown’s death.

The 75-year-old has been in charge of the motel since 2010.

Dalby Parkview Motel manager Terry Merefield said it had been a tough week for the business.

“We got a shock when we found out. Everyone is very shaken,” she said.

“The Dalby Parkview Motel staff were shocked and stunned when Nicholas (Mr Brown’s son) rang us.

“At this stage business is continuing to run as usual.

“We are very saddened by the news and I have sent our condolences to his family and let them know we are here to help them.”

Gliding Federation of Australia president Peter Cesco said Mr Brown was an experienced glider pilot and a member of the Gliding Club of Victoria who was well-known in the sporting industry.

Investigations are continuing into the cause of the crash on the first day of competition at the national championships.

“Simon was flying his JS1C single seat glider,” Mr Cesco said.

“He had released from aerotow and was seen flying straight for a few minutes and then the glider was observed descending vertically at high speed into the ground.

“Pilot medical issues will be investigated by coronial authorities.

“Considerable further work is needed to access flight records and reconstruct the flight, and correlate with meteorological data.

“Members will appreciate that more investigations are required before firm conclusions can be drawn.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Simon’s family and his many gliding friends.”

Mr Cesco said GFA operations and airworthiness investigators were working with police and coronial authorities.
