NUMBERS declined slightly again this week at Dalby, with the combined agents yarding 5038 head of cattle. Supply was from Tara, Chinchilla, St George, Goondiwindi, Miles, Wandoan, Taroom, Kingaroy, Blackall, Millmerran, Pittsworth, Eidsvold, Cunnamulla, Barcaldine, Injune, local supply areas, and 227 from NSW. The yarding consisted of a good supply of yearlings with a large contingent of cows dominating the grown cattle section. The young cattle consisted of some good runs of wellbred lines suitable for feeding and backgrounding, while plain-condition lines were evident throughout. Buyer attendance was varied along with the market as buyers were selective on purchases, with many quality related. Solid demand on weaner cattle from restocker and backgrounders. Feeder steers struggled to hold last week’s prices to be firm to 8c/kg cheaper depending on quality. Feeder heifers were slightly dearer. Export cattle consisted of a good supply of cows, a small yarding of bullocks, steers and grown heifers. A fair mix in quality with some well finished lines and more plainer lines. Competition on export lines was reduced due to a usual buyer not operating, resulting in a 12c/kg fall in the bullock and steer market. Grown heifers topped at 245c/kg. The cow market in the light weight range sold to strong demand, with the medium and heavy cows reduced 3-12c/kg on last week’s prices. Calves sold from $15 to $270.
