From the Driver’s Seat
Mark Lienhop is a 35 year-old driver originally from Harcourt, about half an hour out of Bendigo.
He has been driving trucks since turning 21 and most of those years on interstate work at the wheel of B-doubles.
Not so long ago, with a wife and two growing children, he decided it was time to head home at night, every night. But finding the right ‘local’ job was the big question.
Around the same time, Steve Tyquin was looking for someone with a responsible attitude and a good track record. Following an introduction by one of Steve’s drivers, Mark joined the company earlier this year and now has the reins of the company’s new A-double combination.
Mark concedes it’s early days in the A-double and while there’s a lot to like about the new K200 cab-over, he knows it’ll take time to come to grips with the combination’s characteristics.
“Reversing will be the biggest thing for a while,” he says. “There’s an extra pivot point over a B-double and the drawbar is really quick to react.
“Hopefully I won’t have to back it into tight places,” he says with a grin, “but like anything, practice makes perfect.”
There is, however, already one critical aspect of the A-double that has both surprised and impressed him.
“The trailers track really well. Better than a B-double, for sure,” he reports, “It’s surprising where you can turn it around so it’s all looking good so far.”
