Wheel history preserved

Dubbo’s Golden Oldies Truck Club’s motto is “preserving history on big wheels”. And that’s exactly what happened on August 13 when it organised the 2016 Dubbo Vintage Truck and Tractor Show.

It was a big occasion, with the club celebrating 10 years in existence.

As well as trucks, the show featured a wide variety of machinery, including vintage trucks and trailers, vintage tractors, vintage and classic cars, vintage motor bikes, stationary engines and steam traction engines.

Brian Musgrave, head teacher of manufacturing, engineering, construction and transport at TAFE Western Dubbo College, added another audible dimension to the event with a number of static diesel engines, including an old two-stroke Detroit and a V8 Cummins.

“We used them as teaching aids for many years but their days are over because the old mechanical fuel systems have gone,” Brian says.

“I have an electronically controlled V12 that is a current production Caterpillar C27 and is used in our current classes.”

Brian also had an ISX EGR Cummins engine, used by apprentices to do injector sets, valve sets and all the electronic diagnoses.

Not all the displays were vintage vehicles, however.

There were trade displays, new trucks and truck modelling supplies, while the food and beverage vendors served up anything from ice cream through to sit-down meals.

It all made for a great day out for attendees, truck and machinery owners and the Golden Oldies Truck Club members.

We did it up a bit and now use it as a yard truck.
