Although Grant Waters drives for Gold Coast-based Reiners Transport, the Gatton Racecourse was especially close to home.
“I’m just over the creek, about a kilometre due west,” he explains.
“I just drive down at the end of the week, and then go off to work,” he says. “Sometimes I bring the truck home; sometimes I just drop it back at the yard.” He mostly hauls car parts and general up and down the Pacific between Brisbane and Sydney.
Grant was driving a 2010 Kenworth K108, one of nine Reiners’ trucks that entered the convoy, which included three Argosys, a Western Star and his boss’s T904. The K108 bore a banner of his Grant’s best mate’s father John Allen ‘Plattsy’ Platts.
“They’re getting a few trucks in here today,” he says. “They were still coming when we were leaving Bundamba.
“It’s a good day for it – it’s still hot, but it doesn’t bite you.”
Grant was joined by his wife, two children and his parents. “We’re camping overnight; we’ve got a little set-up back there, and the kids will go off with the babysitter,” he smiles.
