Connecting with industry
It’s not just about show trucks at events such as the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is also taking advantage of the large attendance as means to connect with owner-drivers and small fleet operators, according to Simone Reinertsen. Based in Melbourne, Simone is the NHVR’s stakeholder specialist – engagement and partnerships – for Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.
“We have real trouble though getting to the smaller operators, farmers that may not deal with us regularly, ownerdrivers and such,” Simone says.
“An event like this allows us to connect to those people who perhaps are too busy doing their jobs to really start looking for what the NHVR can do to help them.
“We’re doing more and more work like this, getting out and about to truck stops and to weighbridges, and meeting with operators and just helping them to understand their responsibilities under the law.”
She says one area of focus is the changes to the chain of responsibility law coming in 2018.
“We’ve got about 12 months to inform and educate industry,” she notes.
Simone says she came away impressed with the Alexandra show.
“It’s good fun, meeting with good operators, real operators. So I’ll be here next year,” she says.
