Return of the Star
Shayne Kelly’s 1984 Western Star Cheyenne is one of those lost-and-found stories. His father Ian, who retired three years ago, had bought the truck new but sold it a few years later.
“I bought it back about four years ago and rebuilt it,” Shayne says. “I’ve done about 100,000km in the past two-and-a-bit years.”
Shayne’s business, Melton-based SDK Transport & Logistics, also runs a couple of Kenworth B-doubles. The Western Star, however, is his hobby horse.
“This is just a play around sort of thing,” he adds.
The truck’s impressive paintjob and scrollwork, which included an acknowledgement to his wife Meaghan on the side of the cab, impressed the Alexandra judges. It was picked up the award for best Western Star at the show.
“I try to keep on top of it,” he says. “It makes it a bit easier when the weather’s fine.”
