CMV Truck & Bus Derrimut’s new state-of-the-art dealership
As far as used truck dealerships go, Sam Hunt, used truck manager at CMV Truck & Bus Derrimut, reckons the new digs at 392 Boundary Road are superb.
He’s been in the industry for 10 years and is the first to admit used truck dealers don’t always get the most glamorous work spaces.
The new premises are designed to facilitate the ongoing goal of offering quality, dealershipbacked used trucks, with a comprehensive aftersales network.
But even better than having a brand-new sales and administration office – featuring surely the best coffee you’ll find in a used truck yard anywhere in the world, is getting your three premium brands under one roof.
For the first time ever in its metropolitan dealership group, Mack, UD and Volvo are together in one, tri-branded site, which occupies a generous chunk of the new 80,000-square metre CMV Truck & Bus Derrimut facility in Melbourne’s logistically important western suburbs.
Customers can now make an informed decision about that all-important purchase, with everything laid out in one area.
“It’s a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility,” says Hunt. “We’ve now got our three quality, market-leading brands, and the customer has the option of choosing.”
CMV Truck & Bus Mack, UD and Volvo were previously on two separate sites, which made managing the stock more challenging, according to Hunt. Having all the trucks on one site is a major advantage, he says. “We’re now ready to grow.”
The new premises also features two designated used truck workshop bays, and a full-time mechanic, to complement the sales and administration team.
Vehicles that are traded in are refurbished mechanically and cosmetically here, get checked for roadworthiness and are then ready for a new life with a new owner.
The “business within a business” works alongside the new truck division run out of the same building, meaning customers have a one-stop shop from purchase to trade-in, and re-purchase.
Within the one facility trucks will now be sold new, maintained throughout their life, then traded-in and start new lives as quality used vehicles.
“We want to support the rest of the business, the three new truck departments,” says Hunt.
“I want to make sure the trade-in value and the experience for the customer is an easy one.”
It’s the customer service quality provided by the whole CMV group that Hunt places immeasurable importance on, particularly as word-of-mouth is usually the fastest thing flying down the highway. “If a customer has a bad experience, word travels fast. One thing CMV do really well is we care so much about the customer, and put the customer first. We pick up the phone, we call back. We’re all about repeat business,” he says.

Bus usually offer some form of warranty on its used vehicles. He says customers will walk out knowing what they’re buying and what those expectations are.
“We support what we sell, and sometimes that can be hard to find in the used truck industry,” he says.
The business also doesn’t limit itself to three brands. Trade-ins are accepted on all makes and models. Hunt spends a lot of time sourcing the best used trucks, which he says isn’t always an easy job.

moment, so there’s not an abundance of latemodel, low-km stock available, but things are going well. People often downplay that. It’s a very competitive market,” he says.
Hunt has seen the industry in the good times and the bad. He cut his teeth during the global financial crisis; as good a time as any to knuckle down and work hard he reckons.
He says he learnt a lot during that tough time. “The used market is honestly the best I’ve ever seen it, right now. It also makes it competitive,” he adds.
It’s a challenge he says CMV is ready to embrace, and he believes with the new premises he’s got the perfect base and support to make it happen.
With more than 50 trucks already in stock, and space for at least 15 more, you can expect to find a wide selection of almost every truck imaginable, from B-double linehaul right down to a 6-tonne UD tautliner, pallet trucks and everything in-between.
Hunt says he looks for the same things in used trucks that his customers do. “I’m constantly assessing and evaluating trucks. I know what my customers are looking for because I talk to them every day,” he says.
Hunt says the 13- and 16-litre Volvo and Mack driveline options are ever-popular, and that the tipper industry in particular has been strong.
Staying in touch with market trends and knowing what customers are looking for is the name of the game.
Hunt and the entire CMV Truck & Bus team in Derrimut understand the importance of reputation and that ultimately they will be judged by their product, price and service.
“This is a third-generation, family-owned business who understand the needs of operators. A truck is your livelihood and you can’t have it off the road and killing that livelihood.
“Having this stand-alone site is a luxury and I feel very lucky. We can’t wait to show customers around,” he says.
