CMV Truck & Bus Der­rimut’s new state-of-the-art deal­er­ship

As far as used truck deal­er­ships go, Sam Hunt, used truck man­ager at CMV Truck & Bus Der­rimut, reck­ons the new digs at 392 Bound­ary Road are su­perb.

He’s been in the in­dus­try for 10 years and is the first to ad­mit used truck deal­ers don’t al­ways get the most glam­orous work spa­ces.

The new premises are de­signed to fa­cil­i­tate the on­go­ing goal of of­fer­ing qual­ity, deal­er­ship­backed used trucks, with a com­pre­hen­sive af­ter­sales net­work.

But even bet­ter than hav­ing a brand-new sales and ad­min­is­tra­tion of­fice – fea­tur­ing surely the best cof­fee you’ll find in a used truck yard any­where in the world, is get­ting your three premium brands un­der one roof.

For the first time ever in its metropoli­tan deal­er­ship group, Mack, UD and Volvo are to­gether in one, tri-branded site, which oc­cu­pies a gen­er­ous chunk of the new 80,000-square me­tre CMV Truck & Bus Der­rimut fa­cil­ity in Mel­bourne’s lo­gis­ti­cally im­por­tant west­ern sub­urbs.

Cus­tomers can now make an in­formed de­ci­sion about that all-im­por­tant pur­chase, with every­thing laid out in one area.

“It’s a pur­pose-built, state-of-the-art fa­cil­ity,” says Hunt. “We’ve now got our three qual­ity, mar­ket-lead­ing brands, and the cus­tomer has the op­tion of choos­ing.”

CMV Truck & Bus Mack, UD and Volvo were pre­vi­ously on two sep­a­rate sites, which made man­ag­ing the stock more chal­leng­ing, ac­cord­ing to Hunt. Hav­ing all the trucks on one site is a ma­jor ad­van­tage, he says. “We’re now ready to grow.”

The new premises also fea­tures two des­ig­nated used truck work­shop bays, and a full-time me­chanic, to com­ple­ment the sales and ad­min­is­tra­tion team.

Ve­hi­cles that are traded in are re­fur­bished me­chan­i­cally and cos­met­i­cally here, get checked for road­wor­thi­ness and are then ready for a new life with a new owner.

The “busi­ness within a busi­ness” works along­side the new truck di­vi­sion run out of the same build­ing, mean­ing cus­tomers have a one-stop shop from pur­chase to trade-in, and re-pur­chase.

Within the one fa­cil­ity trucks will now be sold new, main­tained through­out their life, then traded-in and start new lives as qual­ity used ve­hi­cles.

“We want to sup­port the rest of the busi­ness, the three new truck de­part­ments,” says Hunt.

“I want to make sure the trade-in value and the ex­pe­ri­ence for the cus­tomer is an easy one.”

It’s the cus­tomer ser­vice qual­ity pro­vided by the whole CMV group that Hunt places im­mea­sur­able im­por­tance on, par­tic­u­larly as word-of-mouth is usu­ally the fastest thing fly­ing down the high­way. “If a cus­tomer has a bad ex­pe­ri­ence, word trav­els fast. One thing CMV do re­ally well is we care so much about the cus­tomer, and put the cus­tomer first. We pick up the phone, we call back. We’re all about re­peat busi­ness,” he says.

Bus usu­ally of­fer some form of war­ranty on its used ve­hi­cles. He says cus­tomers will walk out know­ing what they’re buy­ing and what those ex­pec­ta­tions are.

“We sup­port what we sell, and some­times that can be hard to find in the used truck in­dus­try,” he says.

The busi­ness also doesn’t limit it­self to three brands. Trade-ins are ac­cepted on all makes and mod­els. Hunt spends a lot of time sourc­ing the best used trucks, which he says isn’t al­ways an easy job.

moment, so there’s not an abun­dance of late­model, low-km stock avail­able, but things are go­ing well. Peo­ple of­ten down­play that. It’s a very com­pet­i­tive mar­ket,” he says.

Hunt has seen the in­dus­try in the good times and the bad. He cut his teeth dur­ing the global fi­nan­cial cri­sis; as good a time as any to knuckle down and work hard he reck­ons.

He says he learnt a lot dur­ing that tough time. “The used mar­ket is hon­estly the best I’ve ever seen it, right now. It also makes it com­pet­i­tive,” he adds.

It’s a chal­lenge he says CMV is ready to em­brace, and he be­lieves with the new premises he’s got the per­fect base and sup­port to make it hap­pen.

With more than 50 trucks al­ready in stock, and space for at least 15 more, you can ex­pect to find a wide se­lec­tion of al­most every truck imag­in­able, from B-dou­ble line­haul right down to a 6-tonne UD taut­liner, pal­let trucks and every­thing in-be­tween.

Hunt says he looks for the same things in used trucks that his cus­tomers do. “I’m con­stantly as­sess­ing and eval­u­at­ing trucks. I know what my cus­tomers are look­ing for be­cause I talk to them every day,” he says.

Hunt says the 13- and 16-litre Volvo and Mack driv­e­line op­tions are ever-pop­u­lar, and that the tip­per in­dus­try in par­tic­u­lar has been strong.

Stay­ing in touch with mar­ket trends and know­ing what cus­tomers are look­ing for is the name of the game.

Hunt and the en­tire CMV Truck & Bus team in Der­rimut un­der­stand the im­por­tance of rep­u­ta­tion and that ul­ti­mately they will be judged by their prod­uct, price and ser­vice.

“This is a third-gen­er­a­tion, fam­ily-owned busi­ness who un­der­stand the needs of op­er­a­tors. A truck is your liveli­hood and you can’t have it off the road and killing that liveli­hood.

“Hav­ing this stand-alone site is a lux­ury and I feel very lucky. We can’t wait to show cus­tomers around,” he says.
